Dr D J Brown MA, BMedSci BM BS

In 1999 Dr D J Brown left his job as a doctor in the NHS, frustrated by a system that seemed half-bent on breaking the people who most wanted to care for pateints. Instead, he developed a career as a implementation consultant, focusing on helping organisations change the way they worked. He learned how spending time and energy creating the right culture can transform the results that an organisation can deliver.
After a few years working outside healthcare he was unable to ignore his vocation for any longer. He returned to work as a doctor. Back in the NHS, he found all of the things he'd been working against in industry: poor leadership, process and systems that didn't work, unbalanced targets and above all, a total lack of understanding of how people are motivated to do a good job.
He found the institutions of the NHS was still populated by caring, capable and committed people who were demotivated and unable to do the job for which they'd trained.
And then the NHS nearly killed his mother.
Despite being a doctor, he could only watch as her hospital treatment went from bad to worse. At that point, he realised the system wasn't working for patients either.
Drawing on twelve years of experience as both a doctor and a results-focused implementation consultant, The Meaning of Careful describes a straightforward, step-by-step programme which will transform any hospital or clinic into a great place to work and a great place to be treated.
