The Meaning of Careful

Dr D J Brownʼs innovative guide to patient and staff centred transformation in the healthcare sector, The Meaning of Careful, was published on 25th October 2009.

The Meaning of Careful addresses the pressing need to improve both patient safety and cost efficiencies while, at the same time, nurturing staff morale and improving the patient experience. The Meaning of Careful offers a unique perspective on the possibilities for change within the healthcare system, informed both by Dr Brownʼs hands-on experience on the front line of the NHS and his involvement in managing change in large corporate organisations.

Dr D J Brown hopes that The Meaning of Careful will offer a positive leadership model to meet the need for a more efficient National Health Service, while continuing to focus on improving patient care. Dr Brown says: “I hope to demonstrate that by putting people before process and taking a long-term view, it is possible to improve patient care radically and to raise the reputation and financial performance of every healthcare institution in the country.”

Driven by a passion to improve patient care Dr Brown acknowledges that while the NHS is vast, heterogeneous, controversially funded and over-managed, if run along more positive lines, it could be both more efficient, cost effective and be better at treating the patients that rely on it.
