Are your Governors ready?
With the advent of the new Health and Social Care Bill, Foundation Trust governors in the NHS have acquired significant new powers.
There is a clear obligation set out in the Bill for trusts to ‘take steps’ to ensure that governors are equipped with skills and knowledge to exercise their duties. FTs can’t sack or ignore governors simply because they don't appear to be up to the job. Governors must be trained, if necessary, by the trust to exercise their duties correctly.
For the first time trust boards have to take an active and continuing interest in the makeup and capabilities of their governors and to cultivate them appropriately.
The CAREFUL approach can be used as a basis for providing such a development and training framework for FT governors.
