The Three Circles
The "Three Circles" model provides a theoretical underpinning of the CAREFUL approach which demonstrates the important systemic link between culture ("human capital") and operational results ("financial capital").
The CAREFUL programme is geared towards improving the motivation and capability of leaders and staff and only indirectly aimed at the nuts-and-bolts of patient care or financial and operational performance.
Our view is that a complex hierarchy of systems and processes already exist to monitor and protect both patients and financial capital. It is our contention that systems for the development and protection of human capital are under-represented, despite the fact that human capital is necessary to deliver both patient care and financial results.

We have also developed a game of Collaboration - called "The Hospital Game" - based on the three circles, that helps demonstrate this model.
